Learning What to Let In

Your system is constantly exchanging energy and information with its environment, whether you’re aware of it or not. Learning to recognize and work with this process can support clearer decision-making, emotional steadiness, and access to your internal guidance.

Set An Energetic Container

We do not open ourselves to the spiritual or energetic realms as an open invitation to anything and everything. We create boundaries. We set filters. We choose what we engage.

Energetic filters are created through two things: intention, and what we understand to be true about the nature of life. What we know is that we are part of a larger living system that is always moving toward more life. Life supports life. Whether you call that larger system Nature, God, Spirit, or the Intelligence of the Universe, we are held within it, supported by it, and participating in it.

I like to call this greater living system Nature.

Everything in Nature has boundaries. Trees have bark. Humans have skin. Cells have membranes. There is always a place where one system ends and another begins. This is also true for us energetically and spiritually.

Like bark or skin, our energy field has “default programming” that filters what is harmful or disruptive. However, unlike skin, our energetic boundaries are dynamic. They respond to focus, emotion, and intention. They can open, close, and tune like a radio tower. We can intentionally shift what we are receptive to, and our energy can also be influenced by the frequencies around us.

For the most part, our energetic system is working on our behalf even without conscious effort. However, because it is responsive to our thoughts and feelings, it can also become porous when we are overwhelmed, fearful, or confused. The good news is that this same sensitivity allows us to consciously strengthen it.

Intention is coherent awareness. It is the act of choosing what we align with, what we open to, and what we do not. When we set intention, we focus our consciousness on what we want to engage and what we want to ignore. Everything is always happening all around us; intention is what creates clarity, distinction, discernment, and safety.

Here is the heart of it: We are a living system inside a greater living system that is fundamentally oriented toward supporting life. When we engage the energetic or spiritual realms, we do so with intention. We set a container. We program our energetic filter settings so that we receive insight, guidance, and support that align with life, while excluding anything that is not meant for us or not supportive of our wellbeing.

Nature is on our side. We belong here. And through intention, we participate consciously with the larger intelligence that already knows how to protect, nourish, and guide us.

Closing an Energetic Container

Just as intentional opening creates safety and clarity, intentional closing creates completion. Closing the container signals to your energetic system that the period of focused spiritual engagement has ended and that your awareness is returning fully to everyday reality.

Closing is not a withdrawal from spirit, nor does it diminish what was received. It allows insight to integrate, boundaries to reestablish, and the nervous system to settle. Without closing, awareness can remain diffuse, leading to fatigue, emotional sensitivity, or a lingering sense of being “open.”

Closing affirms sovereignty. It reinforces that engagement with the spiritual and energetic realms happens by choice, within clear boundaries, and for a defined period of time. Learning to close cleanly is as essential a skill as learning to open.

In my 4-hour course, Intentional Perception: Working With Energy and Information , we learn how to intentionally create a container that feels safe, grounded, supportive, and clear. A container that opens us to the information we are meant to receive, while keeping out anything we are not inviting. Our awareness shifts, our system responds, and we engage the spiritual realms with clarity, agency, and trust.
